Portmanteau is a small artisan shop making fine durable clothing and accessories now located at 11 Free Street in Portland's vibrant Downtown district. Click here for a map and directions. A combination of the best materials and excellent craftsmanship make our canvas bags, tapestry bags, capes, cloaks, and jackets what they are.

Our workshop is open 7 days a week, year round. When you're in Maine do stop in to see our own collection of coats and carry-alls in cotton canvas, sumptuous tapestries and fine leathers. In the meantime, explore our canvas bags, tapestry bags, and our collection of woolen capes, cloaks, and jackets. From simple tote bags to elegant accessories and rugged luggage, our designs are all made in our Portland Maine shop, and carried (or worn) around the world.

We are now showing an all new collection in our new space at 11 Free Street, across from Arabica Coffee and next door to D.S. Lillet Florist. We'll be doing a bit of remodeling here online soon as well. If you're in the greater Portland area, stop by and see us!

This year we are showing more fabric selrctions than ever and moving through them pretty quickly. We are also having fun combining multiple fabrics in the same bag.

We're happy at Portmanteau that you can now view our collection here at portmanteauonline.com. We update the site with new fabrics and styles as we introduce them. We want to be able to serve our clientele at a distance as well as close by. To order from here, you will still need to call or write to us. Your call or letter will still be received by one of our three artisans, sitting at a sewing machine and not behind a computer terminal. More information on ordering, including a downloadable order form is available here.

Partnering Old World materials with bags designed with a modern sensibility, juxtaposing traditional craftsmanship with high tech accessibility is a way for us to meet the needs of a contemporary life without sacrificing quality, artisanship, or the personal connections we all enjoy..

Portmanteau has been involved with a passionate group of small business owners and community advocates to preserve and promote independent business in Portland. To learn more log onto www.portlandbuylocal.org. One of our hometown heroes, Stacy Mitchell, has published a nationally important book called “The Big Box Swindle”. Those of you who love and support small enterprises like Portmanteau will be compelled by this insightful book.

As always we end with a Thank You for your patronage. We love what we do and are grateful that you make it possible for us to continue making our beautiful and durable goods.

Respectfully,
Nancy, Michele, and Lillian
